Spend a day in community at Bethel Farm, sharing in the exciting hoop house building project! This work day is a free community event. If you have never been out to our beautiful farm, it is a great opportunity to take a free yoga class and get to know others in an informal work day environment. Bring a vegetarian dish to share for pot luck lunch. Come for one day or come for both days! Bring a sleeping bag and pillow (mattress provided), stay for a sauna and dinner and spend the night!

One of Michelle Obama’s favored projects is encouraging eating locally and expanding local food production.  Toward that end, the Natural Resource Conservation Service has been offering grants to build seasonal high tunnels, or hoop houses, to extend the growing season.  The hoop house we are raising on Saturday is 85% funded by the program, not including our priceless pooled labor.

Come on out and lend a hand, and get a feel for the elegance of this structure.  We are building the largest size that the program funds completely, but the program supports any size house, even a twelve foot by twenty foot backyard model. The program has been very popular, and there is funding in place for the program to extend at least through next year.   Contact the NRCS in Milford if you are interested in growing vegetables nearly year round.

Twelve years ago, we invested in a fourteen by forty foot hoop house, and it has been a constant source of pleasure.  To go in on a sunny day in early March, smell the warming soil and pick some spinach and kale is bliss.  Sprouting lettuce in October and knowing it will make it through the winter with the simplest of technologies—how sweet.  Can’t help but deepen one’s appreciation for the givingness  of the earth.

So bring your socket-wrench set, or flat wrenches, cordless drill if you have one, some vegetarian food to share for lunch, and let’s have some fun.  Remember dinner is provided by us.

We look forward to seeing you this weekend.
